Meet the Growers: Phat Panda

This weeks Meet a Grower installment takes us to an industrial area of Spokane Valley, WA where one of Satori's newest producers Phat Panda is growing the buds that has our customers telling all their friends about.

Q&A with Phat Panda's Master Grow Manager, James Hentz

Satori: What Tier are you Grower?
James Hentz: Tier 3

Satori: What does being a Tier 3 Producer mean?
James Hentz: Basically Tier 3 is any producer with a minimum 10K Sq. Ft. to maximum 22k Sq. Ft. of growing space. At the moment we are using about 12,000 Sq. Ft. inside a 30K Sq. Ft. facility.

S: When did you get your 502 License?
JH: September 3rd, took us a little longer to get started. The facility had to be constructed from the ground up.

S: How many different strains?
JH: 51 different strains growing producing 25 at the moment with 165 more strains as seeds.

S: Can you name a few?
JH: Bubba Kush, Animal cookies, Lavender and Presidential Kush just hit the shelves.

S: Favorite Strain?
JH: "I'm into the purples that actually get you stoned like Purple SoCal Master Kush, it turns dark, dark purple."

S: What's your Grow style?
JH: We do sort of like a hydroponic system that utilizes a "Drain-to-Waste" we use a soilless formula made from cocoa where it looks and acts like soil but it's not soil. Another method we use is called a "Sea of Green," we use various grow methods depending on each strain.

S: How many employees?
J:H Just under 30: 4 master growers and a good crew.

S: Anything you want your customers to know about your company?
JH: "We have probably, not probably, we have the best facility in Washington currently...for growing, for everything and the product coming out of here definitely shows."

Guiding us around Phat Panda's GrowOp Farm is Master Grow Manager James who begins the walk around this massive 30,000 square foot facility with a quick boot soak in a tub of bleach to kill anything that may have hitched a ride in from outside. It was later said that all the employees bring a fresh change of clothes to change into once they arrive at work to minimize excessive contamination within the production and processing facility. Not only do these practices insure the safety of their crops from harmful pests but it bring a high quality product straight from the producer to the shelves of our store.

The scale of this grow is staggering for a company that has only been producing cannabis for four months. At 16 individual grow rooms with 23 tons of air conditioning per room and 205 dehumidifies placed with the building, Phat Panda is currently only operating at roughly half its growing area allotted by the state legislation. Among many, one benefits to multiple grow rooms is the flexibility to tailor each room's growing conditions (e.g., Light duration, temperature, CO2 level) to suit the needs of each unique strain in an effort to maximize growth which ultimately results in a high quality bud and a satisfied consumer.

Phat Panda sets a high standard for the rest of the industry here in Washington and it can be confidently said their buds are currently the most sought after. After an initial introduction of 10 unique strains, 8 can still be found currently at Satori: OG Chem, Golden Pineapple, Blueberry Trainwreck, Lemon Skunk, God's Gift, NYPD, Berry Sour Creme and the newest Presidential Kush with more on the way!
